Review: Paranoia Park (2014)

Paranoia Park

It is always interesting to watch films of new directors because they don’t always follow the current trends. Being independent or new allows a director some leeway to follow his artistic instinct and do what he wants with the film. And it is because of this that films from independent or new directors always have something fresh to give to its audience.

Things we learned after watching Starting Over Again

Starting Over Again
  1. Architecture is a hot career for rom-coms
The similarly titled One More Chance from 2007 also featured a bad breakup, a second chance, and a female lead as an architect. How exciting are your lives really, female architects? Maybe we should switch careers!

  2. Ancestral homes are lovely
Starting Over AgainAn old family home and whether it should be sold, renovated, or restored is at the center of the film. Reminded us of these hidden gems in our crowded city.

  3. Piolo Pascual, meanwhile, can switch careers all he wants
As Marco Villanueva in this movie, Piolo starts off as a history teacher, but switches careers several times. But the smolder is consistent!

Movie review: It Takes A Man and A Woman

It Takes A Man and A Woman

I didn’t watch “It Takes A Man and A Woman” on its opening day, yet surprisingly, the screenings were still packed days after the opening. I can therefore be forgiven if I had high expectations for this movie.

It Takes A Man and A WomanIt Takes a Man and a Woman is the third and final installment in the A Very Special Love series of films. The movie follows the life of Miggy (John Lloyd Cruz) and Laida (Sarah Geronimo) after their break-up which occurs after the events of the second film. Miggy is now in a relationship with Belle (Isabelle Daza) while Laida is now a more mature woman after living in the United States. They work in the same company, and there is a bit of tension because Laida finds herself opposing many of Miggy’s business decisions.

Love: Emily VanCamp

Emily VanCamp

She made headlines this week by getting the female lead in Captain America: Winter Soldier. Emily VanCamp’s been in your peripheral vision for years though. Are you happy that she’s gotten her first really big movie break?

Love: Park Shin Hye

Park Shin Hye

Park Shin Hye will be gracing Manila with her gorgeousness in a couple of months, and Team MJ is super psyched to finally see her in person. The event will be on March 16 at the Star Theater in the CCP Complex, and is brought to us by Behind the Scenes and Fangirl Asia. Shin Hye will officially be the first Korean actress to hold a fan meeting in the Philippines.

Park Shin Hye in the January 2013 issue of InStyle

Best known for her starring roles in the popular Korean dramas “He’s Beautiful” (a.k.a. “You’re Beautiful”, a.k.a. “Minami Shineyo”) opposite superstar Jang Geun Suk, and “Heart Strings” opposite Jung Yong Hwa of the Korean pop band C.N. Blue (both shows were aired locally on ABS-CBN), Shin Hye is currently breaking hearts in “Flower Boy Next Door”, which premiered on January 7 this year. In this romantic comedy, she plays Go Dok Mi, a girl who suffers from a fear of people and the outside world, and has shut herself up in her apartment. Her only connection to people is her infatuation with her cute neighbor, whom she has never spoken to and only sees from her window. We’ve seen the first two episodes, and it’s looking to be a winner.

Tina and Amy Were Amazing in The Golden Globes

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey at the Golden Globes

There should be a special award for Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) for their amazing job hosting The Golden Globes awards yesterday. Both local celebrities and local audiences took to Twitter to show their appreciation for the amazing comedic duo.

What were people saying was the best thing about the Golden Globe?

Opening January 16: Les Miserables, Parental Guidance, A Haunted House

Parental Guidance

You know the drill: Three new movies, but you only have time and money for one. Which will you pick?

Les Miserables
Oscar contender, one of the best-known and -loved musicals, actors singing instead of lip-syncing!

See the trailers of Parental Guidance and A Haunted House too!

Opening January 9: Life of Pi, Jack Reacher, Red Dawn

Red Dawn

Some of us barely have the time to watch a movie, let alone every new movie opening the same week. January 9 is bringing new releases Life of Pi, Jack Reacher, and Red Dawn. Which one will you put your money on?

Life of Pi
Acclaimed novel and director, fantastic effects.

Jack Reacher
Big action, probably some laughs.

Check out the Red Dawn trailer, too!

Martin Freeman

We couldn’t be happier that Martin Freeman is getting his shot at supersuperstardom with The Hobbit, which is premiering in local cinemas this week, but he’s been around for a while, and in stuff we like.

Does he look familiar to you? Maybe you saw him…
