Music & Lyrics is one of those movies that never fail to suck me in when I catch it on TV. Part of it is the simple, charming story that cleverly raises questions about art vs. commercialism while working a sweet romance. The other is Drew Barrymore’s character, Sophie Fisher, and wardrobe as styled by costume designer Susan Lyall.

I think Sophie’s style is perfect for the busy mommy interested in fashion. It’s cool without being trendy, boho without being costume-y, comfy without being sloppy, and most of all, workable. These are clothes you can wear chasing after kids, meeting clients, hanging out with friends and working! And they’re classic – the movie came out in 2007 but these clothes still look great today.

Sophie’s style is a mix between utilitarian classics (good jeans, military jacket, button-down) softened with some quirky flavor – colorful accessories, jewelry and dresses. Here’s what I think is Sophie’s wardrobe essentials.
- A loose, crocheted cardigan (Joseph M, but you’ll find this in Landmark for a fraction!)
- Good, dark jeans and a military jacket (Zara)
- Colorful scarves (Ayu, but again a trip to Tiendesitas will unearth something way cheaper)
- Ethnic-print dresses (Can’t beat this P595 beauty from The Collective!)
- Structured button-downs (Invest in a classic, like this pinstriped Zara)
- A man’s vest (101 New York)
- Striped shirts! (Kamiseta)
- Classic twill shorts (Jellybean)
- Tights (Forever 21; but check SM Department Store too)
- Comfy shoes with attitude (Folded & Hung studded brogues)
- A roomy bag for all your stuff (Bayo satchel, Thrifty Mom winner for P599!)
- Boho costume jewelry (Accessorize)
