Team MJ braved the rains yesterday with Music Editor Tere to buy tickets to the Smashing Pumpkins concert that’s happening on Tuesday, 7 August 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The tour by the iconic band is to promote its new album, Oceania (Martha’s Music/EMI Label Services/Caroline Distribution), which had been “recorded at singer/guitarist Billy Corgan’s private studio in Chicago with his bandmates: guitarist Jeff Schroeder, drummer Mike Byrne and bassist/vocalist Nicole Fiorentino.”
The Smart Araneta concert promises fans a full visual and auditory experience, as the band’s sound will be supported by “new technology in video mapping.” The concert set playlist also promises longtime fans numbers from their earlier albums.
While Team MJ is stoked for Smashing Pumpkins’ new music, since this a column about song covers, we give you “Landslide”, Smashing Pumpkins’ acclaimed cover of the Fleetwood Mac song. The focus of the song on personal growth
Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older and I’m getting older too
perfectly ties in with how Billy Corgan views his evolving work. When asked about his latest album, he said,
“If we’ve learned anything from playing as an intact unit now for over two years, it’s that unless we create our own sound and our own legacy, it’s a given that people will default to what they know; whether it’s my past or someone else’s. We know we have much more in us to share than being an alluring, virtual jukebox. Being in The Pumpkins will always be defined by what we can create from our hands and hearts right now, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
