Project Runway Season 3: Countdown to the final runway

Katrina Ramos Atienza: Plus Size Fasyon Mudra

We have our final four; now it’s only time to for the show to look back over the past season, relive choice moments and generally build buzz till the final – which is what the past two episodes were all about.

Credit to the production team that this reality competition show conceit got slick treatment: we had the ousted designers talking about the designs that cost them, and then a Bravo-reunion style show with the final four. It’s all cute and fun – and next week promises to be the “Tim Gunn/Jojie Lloren visits the hometown” episode – but man am I ready to see that final runway!

Let’s throw out some predictions and analysis in the meantime.

Cheetah Rivera

The designer: Cheetah Rivera
Favorite work: Avant garde playsuit
Strength: Strong point of view, sense of drama, smart use of unconventional elements
Weakness: Tendency to overwork garments
Final collection prediction: Dark, gothic dresses with unsettling, organic elements – think Charlize Theron’s Snow White and the Huntsman costumes

There’s no doubt that Cheetah’s the one to beat here. As other designers have gotten progressively tired and diluted, Cheetah’s only gone from strength to strength, hitting her stride in the middle of the competition and never letting go. The avant garde playsuit displays the height of her powers. If there’s anything this self-confessed “maximalist” needs to watch, it’s to ensure her sense of drama doesn’t overwhelm her designs.

Odds: 3:4 Virtually a lock, but may be susceptible to an upset.

Amor Albano

The designer: Amor Albano
Favorite work: Indigenous “Tessa Prieto” dress
Strength: Effortlessly romantic sensibility, killer draping skills
Weakness: Can veer towards twee
Final collection prediction: Swirling goddess gowns and dramatic cocktail looks.

Amor is my favorite: not only is she a joy to watch, she also has this unhurried, relaxed working style – as expected from someone who’s been apprenticing at a dress shop from a very early age. Amor has the skills and the sensibility to win the competition – but only if she can tamp down the urge to go full beauty queen mode (her favorite setting) and add a dash of sophistication and restraint to the proceedings.

Odds: 2:4 It’s a 50/50 proposition for Ms. Amor.

Milka Quin Redoble

The designer: Milka Quin Redoble
Favorite work: Episode 11 seashell dress
Strength: Subtle sex appeal, an understanding of how a real-life woman wants to dress
Weakness: Uneven work
Final collection prediction: Sleek, chic mini-dresses and workable separates

I’m excited to see what Milka will come up with – not just because she’s unpredictable, but also because when she’s firing on all cylinders she’s got this undeniably chic sportswear sensibility: think Michael Kors or, to localize it, a more feminine Veejay Floresca. If she can tease out the wow factor in her subdued designs she may cause a huge upset!

Odds: 1:4 Milka’s unfussy aesthetic might be the visual break the judges need on that final runway.

Nel Claveria, Jr.

The designer: Nel Claveria,Jr.
Favorite work: Striped mini-dress
Strength: Clean lines and impeccable tailoring
Weakness: “Taste issues”
Final collection prediction: Straight, tailored pieces in muted colors, tricky seaming and
minimal embellishment.

Fan favorite Nel snatched a place in the final from the jaws of elimination, but I’m still on the fence. Yes, he’s a master craftsman, and yes he’s shown growth and maturity over the competition, but I’m still waiting for that “wow” moment. Knowing how beloved Nel is and his penchant for surprises, the final runway may just provide that.

Odds: 1:4 He’s shown a real hunger to win, and that drive could cause a breakthrough collection.

Who are you rooting for? Who’s overrated? Who’s do you predict will win? Have at it!
