Charlotte Jean Davidson (aka Charley Davidson) is the grim reaper, tasked to convince souls to go into the light. Her ability to see dead people comes in handy in her day job as private investigator — she can literally ask the souls who killed them.
The book gets hot and steamy right at the start, an erotic drean with a with a sinfully hot guy wreathed in shadows. Before things escalate, she’s awakened by a dead guy who had been murdered that night. In that first chapter, you already know that the plot revolves around finding out who the mystery dream guy is, and solving a murder – which turns out to be a triple homicide.
It’s a fast-paced story, told from Charley’s sassy and sarcastic point of view. Her quirky persona is complemented by her equally funny and interesting family and colleagues – Ubie, her uncle; Cookie, her receptionist; Garret Swopes, the sexy skiptracer; and Angel, her ghost side kick/investigator. There’s also the plethora of souls who follow her around.
It’s an entertaining read, with an engaging heroine who’s smart, brave and funny. She’s not the typical doom and gloom reaper – rather, a reaper who’s good at what she does: solving cases, directing souls to Heaven and passing on messages to those left behind. Her comebacks are hilarious, as is her predilection to name her body parts.
If the ending leaves you hanging, the next 2 books in the series – Second Grave on the Left and Third Grave Dead Ahead – are out (yay!). Her novela For I Have Sinned (set between books 2 and 3), is also available now.
Happy reading!
